Wondering if someone out there can help me out. I"ve actually got two 1950 TO 20"s They are both wired the same. The one has had some starting issues. I have had the starter rebuilt, replaced the starter switch ( The switch connected to the shift lever), and replaced the voltage reg. She started and ran fine for a few weeks and now she won"t do anything. Now here is my puzzlement. Everything I read is about a 6 volt system I have not found anything about converting TO 20"s to 12 volts. Well both of my TO"s have 12 volt batteries in them with - being the ground. This seems wrong from what I have seen. Could I be frying something? If so then I wonder why the other runs so well? Any info passed on this way would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

look at your voltage regulator make sure its says 12v negetive ground. If it says 6v positive ground then change the battery and change the hook up. Also it you have put anything else besides gas into the carb to start them take the spark plugs out and clean them.

I had some problems with my TO 20 also. Assuming everything was changed over to a 12v system properly, some things I ran into with mine that you might check. Make sure the ground is good. Check the gear shift starter mine shorted out twice do to 2 different problems. Double check your starter I took mine back to the place that rebuilt it 2 times after they had worked on it to get it fixed right, then it broke again and I took it to a differant shop before getting it fixed right, now that part is aleast working right. The wiring is basicly the same from diagrams I've seen it's just the wiring is opposite of a 6volt system when looking at how to ground.

Rob raises a very important point which is a weakness in early Fergies. If the battery earth goes to the back of the dash (as it does with the TE series), remove, clean up the terminal to bright metal and connect either to one of the bell housing bolts, or directly to one of the starter motor bolts. They are notorious for poor earths; I've seen a number suffering from a hot oil pressure gauge capillary tube due to that being the earth from dash panel to engine!

Is the generator polarised for negative earth? Do you have a 12 volt coil installed?

In converting to 12 volt, negative (-) earth, make sure the correct 12 volt coil is installed (or an inline resister) and that the leads were changed over: + (pos) to ignition switch; - (neg) to distributor points.
