TO-30 Seat (Velvet Ride?)

The seat on the TO-30 that I just got has a different setup than most Fergies in this series. It has a large spiral spring under one end of a seat support flat-bar with a pan seat mounted above the spring. A shock absorber is attached to the bar mid way. The other end of the seat support bar has a special bracket on the transmission housing, just aft of the shift lever, used as an attach and pivot point. The flat-bar is about 18" long. The seat flips up like most of the other Fergusons. All that I have seen in photos, etc., just have a U shape leaf spring for seat suspension like the Fords (Can I say FORD here?) I can find no information on this style seat or what it is called. I am restoring the tractor and this seat gizmo has created some problems due to extensive rust. I had to make new shock bolts on my lathe as they have special, multiple shoulders on the bolt body, etc. I am still trying ot find some shock bushings. International uses a similar spring and shock but mechanically different.

Thanks for the reply about the Ford with the seat shock system called the EZ ride. That is what I have. Do you know if that was an option for Ferguson or maybe someone modified it? Now all I have to do is find a FORD parts link for this item. I have looked at a few Ford links but found nothing yet. At least I know now what to look for. Thanks again for the quick reply and answer.

Hi Hal.. Search for Monroe and/or EZRide (or EZ ride) in both the Ferguson and Ford Forums and you will find numerous pictures and parts references... The Monroe was added to the official Ford parts list with a Ford Part No. and was a dealer option. Likewise, the seat was also delivered as a dealer installed option on some Ferguson 30s (I know 'cause I got one in 1952) but Harry never added it to his official parts list. The Monroe seat was black and either installed that way of painted red (for Fords) or gray (for Fergusons) which was the case for mine in 1952. Parts that you might need are the shock, the spring and the bushings. In your search, you should find info about all of them.. The bushings, I think, are not available but easily made from a similar size. Good luck.. (I have one that I am restoring for my TO-30.) Jim

Glad to hear that I am not alone on a TO-30. I have googled myself to death on parts but no luck. I found some bushing under automotive to take care of that. My spring is good although few rust pits (hope it doesn;t break when I set on it).

The hood system that I was suppose to get for my tractor disappeared from where it was kept in the country along with some other old tractor of some sort. So that is it for that and left me without a hood. But today, I found a whole complete system in Alabama about 130 miles from here along with 2 other hoods (which were on Ebay - but not the system). $350 for the system including 1 rusted headlight, 2 wing attach fittings and one Ferguson emblem. But the rust on the bottom curved 3 inches of the grill was rusted thru along with the lower 2 inches of dog legs. The grill although rusty was intact and the hood onlys surface rust. When I see new doglegs going for $350, I decide that this might not be to bad a deal along with no freight, taxes, etc., so I bought it. I was already out the driveway as he would not come down, but then I turned around. I have the skills to make the repairs. Seems that there is a run on old Ferguson parts. he had several Ford tractor but no buyers. He may just part them out. $350 for rusty stuff, hum bah!
