TO30 starter problem

My TO30 has an almost new 6 volt battery and appears fully charged - lights come on bright and it has been on a charger - but when I engage the starter the bindex crashes into the ring grear way too hard then groans mightily as is slowly turns over the engine. It turns way to slowly to start and shortly stops turning over.
If I leave the starter engaged the negative terminal connection on the battery get real hot but the starter will not turn over the engine.
I would replace the battery before considering buying another starter but I know something is wrong with the bendix as it sound like its going to bash the flywheel off. I assume the spring has gotten "weak" and is supposed to absorb the shock of the toothed gear going forward into the ring grear and is no longer doing that job. I can either buy a new starter drive assembly or the complete starter.
To complicate matters I discovered that the battery has been hooked up negative ground for at least 20 - 30 hours of operation. I just reversed the connections to make it positive ground and charged the battery for 3 - 4 hours at a 2amp/hr rate. Reversing the terminals of the battery did not help the starting problem.

I do not know what effect the reversed terminals had on the charging system other than not allowing it to charge at all. But I would not suspect it to harm the starting system.
Would it harm the battery?
Does a faulty stater motor crank slowly then stall out like this? What would you suggest replacing 1st?

I put in the new drive and #1 gauge cables, both hot (negative) and ground. I rerouted the ground to the bolt that secures the base of the steering gear housing to the bell housing and now it starts great. It is not charging though - the ammeter goes from 0 to discharge when I put on the lights so that's another project. Thanks

Try polarizing the generator again. It may start charging again, or not. Your explanation sounds like that's the problem though. Remember- just a quick touch does it.

Another thing to check is the starter switch adjustment. If you still have the factory hookup using the gear shift, your switch is on top of the bell housing. It has slots for the bolts which allows it to slide to tighten the connection when you move the shift lever to start it. Sliding the switch forward (toward radiator) might make that connection more solid and make the starter turn better. I have seen that make a difference.

Before you damage the ring gear, try replacing the drive assy(approx.$33) as you think. The Batt. cables are next. 12V cables are too small to carry the needed current, replace them with 6V cables. You can have them made at a battery store if they can't be bought. The pos. ground cable is attached to the dash. Reroute it to the block and see if this eliminates some resistance. Over the last 46 years the bolted dash has rusted/collected dirt and causes high resistance.

hi there i agree take starter off and have it checked out at a place that does thatkind of work.i have a to30 that iswitched to 12 volt it works great but i have to get new brushes put in the starter almost every year.these starters have a short brush and doesnt last long with the 12 volt system.at least thats what im told at the starter rebuid shop.
