My TO20 stays running as long as jumper cables stay connected. Is this the generator or the voltage reg. and how is best way to start testing??? P.S. Useing a very weak 12v battery! Thats the way I've been using it and ran fine!!
Thanks Gene

To-20's come with generator's, once the battery starts the engine you can disconect it and the engine keeps running. If you Generator does not work how ever, you will find the the engine will run as long as you battery does. When the battery runs out of juice so does the tractor, you can test your generator by putting a voltage tester on the two leads the come out of the generator. You should read 6V DC if not clean the hell out of the leads and then if nothing the generator is bad and your tractor will not run when it drains all the juice from your battery.

Gene, don't really understand your post. Do you have a TO20 with a 12V generator & regulator, (which is a non-standard configuration) ? OR, a 6V generator & regulator with a weak 12V battery?

George

Weak? Sounds like your battery has rigor mortis!!

Your battery is probably converting the generator output to heat! Obviously the battery plus generator output provide insufficient current to sustain spark.

Why not buy a new battery? And get your generator output checked?
