Good morning all. I am going to finish up cleaning out the rear end in the TO20 this weekend. I have followed the diesel/weed sprayer routine and it worked pretty good. I do have one problem in that there is a lot of gunk back up under the pump that I can�t get out. It includes little particles of rust so I really want that area good and clean. I�m going to have to drop the pump so I can get at it. The service manual says all that is necessary is to remove the bottom end of the fork and the unit will drop out. The manual is fine but I have had some surprises in the past that I would like to avoid this time. Is there anything else I will run into? All I want to do is drop the unit out, clean it up, and put it back in. Thanks for any advice. Jack

Just make sure that you spread the legs of the Control fork hanging down from the top wide enough without forcing them so that you can detach the Control Valve at the bottom. Don't be rough with it. Use new gaskets when you rebuild it or it may leak under pressure, use the correct oil and lube all the bolts before you put them back it ir they may "pick-up" on the threads in the castings and you think they are tight when they are not. Tighten them to 45-50lbs ft. If you need the written info how to do this email me at:

You will have to remove your PTO shaft, it goes thru the pump. Just remove the four bolts on the rear and it should pull out.This is also a good time to replace your PTO seal if it's leaking.Remove the side covers. I cut a piece of wood long enough to spread the control fork off the control valve.The pump will drop out the bottom.

Tim in Tenn: I bet you can help me with my 283 oil pump question.. Should balancers be down? UP?

Thanks fellas, pretty much like the manual says. I already have the PTO shaft out, side covers off, and I also took the cover off the trans. so I could get a good shot down in there. It all gave me the opportunity to see all the inner works and I sure like what I see except for about an inch of goo down there. Appreciate the advice. Jack
