TO-35 Clutch chatter

My '55 TO-35 Deluxe (Gas)is indicating problems. In short, the clutch pedal "chatters" when fully depressed, it has become difficult to switch gears in high or low, and the PTO won't engage unless the engine is turned off. I'm guessing a clutch problem but would like to get an idea of the probem's size. Do these things seem the type that can be fixed with an adjustment or am I looking a splitting the tractor and hiring a real mechanic?

If it is only the PTO clutch that is causing you problems, you MAY be able to do some adjustment that would help. This can be done through the inspection hole in the bottom of the Clutch housing, it is rather fiddling to get into, especially if you have big hands, but it can be done. Obviously there is wear on the Clutch and this is what it is all about, you need to adjust this wear out. There are THREE screws with nuts spaced evenly around the clutch, they are screwed into the disc that is next to the engine flywheel, there is a gap above the screw that you need to measure and adjust by slackening the locknut and unscrewing the screws, making the gap smaller. the gap should be .090" when everything is new but as it wears it will need to go smaller, you can adjust the gap by .005" "steps" until it works, BUT don't go less that.065" gap or you may find that the Clutch fingers get mangled.
