Inspection plates and drain plugs

Thanks to everyone who responded to my recent query. I have some more questions. First, I believe Jeff-Oh mentioned there were three drain plugs on my TO-35. I probably didn't look hard enough, but I opened the drain under the filler plug and the rear most one under the axle hump when I drained the transmission on sautrday. Where is the third one?
Second, people have told me to open the two inspection plates on the sides of the transmission for cleaning. On the right side of the tranny is a plate which contains the dipstick. On the left side is another plate which has the pto engagement lever. If I try to remove the left side one, does the pto lever come off easily with the plate? The tractor is equipped with the two speed pto, ground and engine speeds.

There is no need to remove the PTO lever from the round inspection plate normally, just remove the 6 screws and it will come off the Tractor easily in one piece. If you are cleaning it all out, don't forget to remove the PTO shaft as well to get into the Rear Axle. remove the screws holding the PTO shaft in place and pull the shaft out of the Tractor, it may be a little tight as there is an"O" ring around the outside of the bearing housing that can hold everything in the axle.

There is no need to remove the PTO lever from the plate unless you have a broken lever, they do remove easily together.

As a modern day Auto mech. you will not be challenged by anything on these tractors.

The PTO lever is held in place with a roll pin, drive it out and the lever comes off easily.

The TO-35 will have 2 drain plugs on the side of case. The TO-20/30 has three on the centerline bottom. Thus you did not miss one.

The left side plate will come off easily. The PTO lever has a similar piece on the inside that has a tip on it that engages a groove in a gear. Thus as the lever is moved fwd or Aft the gear is moved fwd and aft to engage the PTO.

Take the plate off and you will see it is no big deal.

BTW: I had the same concerns. The first time you take something apart you can be full of concern and apprehension, then when it is done you see the simplisticy of Harry's designs. At least that is how I was.
