Looks like someone had some fun in the past on my TO-35. Is this a big deal? The seal on this side was the wrong one so I don't really know if this can go back together with the right seal installed or if it does, whether it will not leak.

It looks like there might be enough room to clear the seal, but I don't really know.

I have to visit my friendly machinist next week, I suppose I should bring this as well and see if he can put it right. And I suppose if I take one I should take both so he can remove the collars so the bearings can be properly repacked, eh?

I think it would be wise to have your machinist look at your problem before you try anything. I just completed this exact task this spring with sucess. I did it exactly the way John (UK) describs in his post. Whoever did this did not do you any favors. Please keep us posted on your progress. Regards, John

The seal wont leak because it is on the other side of the hub, near to the flange on the axle shaft. Providing you can get the collar off without damaging the shaft too much it will be ok. The new collar needs heating until it is cherry red before you drop it into place and then it needs tapping a little more to make sure that it is right up to the bearing. What has probably happened here is that some "brainchild" has fitted the collar cold and it has come loose so they welded it into position. The problem you may have is getting the bearing hub over the part where it was welded unless you make a really good job of cleaning it up. You need to drill a hole vertically in the collar then split it with a chisel and after you cut the weld away it will drop off. To pull the hub off the Axle shaft you will need a good power press that is capable of exerting a pressure up to 30 tons in extreme cases, others aren't as bad as that. Make sure that you use ALL the bolt holes in the Hub or it could deform the hub as it pulls and the face that mates with the axle housing will no longer form a seal and will leak oil. Make sure that you fit the new seal the correct way in the housing with the lip facing inwards to keep the oil in...John

John, on a TO-35 there's an inner and an outer seal. The outer keeps the grease in the bearings, the inner keeps the rear axle fluid from leaking into the drum. Isn't that correct? The inner seal rides very close to this weld, I think.

Yes there are two seals on a TO35 the seal lip should face towards the collar so you have little area to play with. You will of course need to change the seals when you have cut the Collar off. To be strictly correct, it is the outer one that prevents any oil or grease getting into the Drum, the inner one keeps the oil where it should be, in the axle housing. The outer one is nearest the brake Drum and the inner one is nearest the Tractor.(can be a bit confusing)Don't forget to adjust the axle float(.002"-.008") with the shims which fit next the the Rear axle housing, then a gasket, then the brake back plate, then a gasket, then the axle-shaft hub. Make regular checks on the tightness of the hub nuts because if they come loose,which they do (especially if it has a loader fitted)the hub will move and wear the gasket away. Unless you fit the shims next to the Tractor axle housing, it will leak oil.
