TO-30, yes another oil question

New to this site, folks, and I'd appreciate a little advice. I just took possession of a 1953 TO-30 from a buddy of mine in great shape. It's never had anything but non-detergent oil in it.

Seems to me there are good reasons to change over to detergent oil. Assuming it was to actually de-gunkify the engine, do you think it a good idea to run the detergent oil through, run the engine for a few minutes, then change, repeating this one or two more times? Overkill? Whatcha think? Many thanks for your help!

Oil pan comes off real easy, pull the pan clean it out and switch over.

I really have no idea as to the build-up that may or may not be in the engine. I just assumed there would be some. Engine compression, oil pressure are reassuringly high. I could be making an issue out of nothing, which is why I"m asking the experts!

...Point...., opinions about oil vary, and everyone has their own opinion. Here"s mine. Switch to the detergent oil, likely will do NO harm. If your so inclined, run a can of that crankcase cleaner stuff before switching. Follow the directions on the can, the stuff can do harm if run too long. About ANY modern oil is gonna be better than whatever was in use back in the 50"s. Don"t waste your money on high end oil, the stuff on the cheap end of the row meets todays oil standards and will fine in your TO. Like the other guys said, your TO don"t run high RPMS or temps like modern cars, so the cheap oil is fine. I personnaly like the 15W diesel engine oils, like one of the other guys mentioned. Run your engine a while, change the oil & see how it looks. If you live in the North, like me, you will probably be happier with a multiweight oil, as opposed to straight 30WT oil, starts easier on thoise cold Winter.

I would definitely switch to detergent oil. My TO-35 prefers Shell Rotella 15w-40, it seems quieter and even has a bit more oil pressure than with other types. Are you sure there is a large amount of gunk in your engine? Remember, these older engines don"t run nearly as hot or with as many RPM"s as a modern automotive engine. The repeated heating and cooling cycle of operation is really what causes gunk to form, as the lighter components of the oil are cooked out and vented and what remains is a mix of paraffin, carbon, and combustion by-products.

Depends on how much "gunk" is there... It isn't going to loosen it all at once anyway.. but as it does, there is no doubt going to be dust and dirt captured in these deposits that will circulate with the oil. the oil filter unit is not full flow (it bypasses most) so some of this dirt will circulate through the bearings. Changing the oil (and filter) often will help, but the buildup took years... so the cleanup might take just as long... Personally, if the engine was really dirty, I'd stick with the NonD if I could find it.. and IF I were to switch over, I'd use a good commercial engine flush before changing over...Jim

This is what I think, oil wasnt that great back in the 1950's and earlier especially, it did the job, but wasnt that great. If the engineers at Ferguson had found access to an oil that was similar to todays better detergent oil, I think they would have instantly made it standard for the tractors they made, I have been running Citgo Mystic JT-8 15-40 in my to-20 for over a year, it is a sythetic blend and my little tractor has had the best oil pressure ever, and after 2 oil changes, the oil stays cleaner longer, and it even seems to run a little smoother... but that could be my imagination as well. Just my 2 cents
