I been the owner of what I believe is a TE20 of the late 40s. It is my first tractor and was purchased about 12 months ago. I like the character of the fellow and he is all I need for 40 acres. The problem is he has no hydraulic lift without the PTO rotating. I understood that the hydraulic lever has two steps with half down being lift only and full down lift and rotation. Any guidance into fixing this would be much appreciated. Thanks. Peter at Yarraford.

The Hydraulics will not work on the standard tractor unless the PTO is running...do you have a problem with that? If so what are you trying to do that makes it necessary for the PTO not to run. If you are also trying to explain that the hydraulics don't hold at any given height, that is correct as the tractor only has Draft control which only operates when an implement is in the ground. So as it is the lever will only lift and lower until you use something that works in the ground. If you want to hold something out of the ground at a given height then you need a "Zane Thang" which is an "add-on" position Control Kit which sells for about $100. Peter,

The two-stage clutch on Ferguson tractors was not introduced until the advent of the Detroit-produced TO-35 and the Coventry-produced FE-35, both of which had that feature available on the Deluxe models. Depressing the clutch half way stopped the tractor. Pressing it all the way down then stopped the PTO/lift.

at first I thought you were talking about a helicopter, not a tractor, since we all know that a helicopter flies by balancing lift versus drag and rotation :-)

Lift balances weight and thrust balances drag, tail rotor thrust balances main rotor torque for level, unaccelerated flight.

No Kevin. Helicopters defy gravity through levitation caused by a million parts vibrating in unison.

Some of course, are so ugly they are simply repulsed by the earth.

Never fly in anything where the wing moves faster than the fuselage..... ... LOL

Your tractor is operating entirely the way it was designed to function. No rotation - no hydraulics. You can't change that!

Not entirely true...Click on the link and scroll down to the "live Thang". Not a change to the original system, but an add on that should do what he wants.

Dan. I have a Zane Thang on my TEA20, bought it almost two years ago.

It is a position control device only - and works very well - but it won't overcome the fact that without the PTO being engaged (thus PTO shaft turning) you don't have the hydraulics for the Zane Thang to work with.

The Zane Thang is very useful in many applications but neutralises the automatic depth control.

Bob, You are supposed to switch it out of position control to get the Draft Control back again.It doesn't stay in Position Control permanently. and as someone has already pointed out...Live Thang is completely different to what you have. It supplies hydraulic power as long as the engine is running.
