My TE20 just keeps eating points. What i have is a full 12v system with the original distributor. A battery cutoff switch and a toggle to turn on the ignition. Put a brand new set along with a rotor on and the tractor ran great several times. I shut everything off and removed the battery. 2 weeks later i put the battery back in.. crank it and have no spark.

What could be happening to this thing? Im using a brand new Optima battery. Does the high CCA have something to do with the load on the coil?

2 things to try- 1) new condensor 2) when you converted to 12v did you change to pos ground?? does the polarity of your ignition system match the polarity of batt/charging system??

Was the original electrical system a 6 volt one, if so, then install a resistor in the wire going to the coil to cut the voltage down to 6 volts.

Getting the best gap between the points is essential for proper engine performance and reliability. Set the points too wide and the spark plugs don't get enough juice. Set them too close and the engine works fine for a few miles, until the points are burnt beyond use.

You may need to check the dwell angle with a gauge, in fact, you can set the optimum points gap by dwell angle alone.

I seem to recall that a faulty condenser will also cause burnt points? Someone else here will know.

My TEA20 doesn't have points or condenser. Electronic ignition - no points, no condenser and spark plugs last ten times longer. Easier starting, better running. Best investment I ever made.

when i changed mine to 12 volt i had to put a resister from 12 v down to 6v it did the same thing kept eating up points.
