TO-35 Transmission not working

Just bought a TO-35 Ferguson. 1957 model. It currently can't shift. The fellow I bought it from says he was mowing with it and he pushed the clutch it to let it row down a hill (not sure why) and when he got to the bottom he could not shift. What things should I look for? I'm new to this so whatever hints or signs to look for would be greatly appreciated.

If you can't move the Gear change lever then it is stuck in gear, but if you can move the lever into all the gears but nothing happens when you let the clutch pedal up then it could be that when he free-wheeled down the hill and he was in low gear with his foot on the Clutch pedal he has thrown the linings off the clutch plate due to centrifugal force and it is trying to drive metal to metal. The engine would have to come out to repair that.

I can move the normal shifter but the high/low shifter does not seem to work? Could that be out somehow? When I push the clutch down and shift it in gear and let out you can hear activity in the transmission. Like the gears are moving. Hope this helps.

You say about the High-low lever not moving, is it in its correct position and not to one side, as that would indicate that it had come out of the selector
It could be that the selector rail has seized in the Transmission housing, it's up in the top and it gets any condensation there is, and the rail could have rusted. It means the top coming off and the tractor splitting at the back of the Transmission. It could be something to do with the Epicyclic reduction box too, this is on the back of the main box, so again it has to be split for that. You will hear noise in the box as it is being driven by the engine when you take your foot off the Clutch Pedal even though it isn't in gear, part of the Transmission is running. You don't say what position the High/low lever is stuck in, if it is in neutral then it could also be the safety switch on top of the Clutch Housing has broken up and is locking the selector rail, just take the switch out and see if the button is still on the end of it and you can try the lever again with it out...John

If it is stuck in gear should I be able to move the tractor? I messed with it some this morning and now seams to go in gear(feels like it is) but it still does not actually move. Could the Hi/Lo gear be stuck? What should I look for?

Assuming it's the classic "Stuck in 2nd Gear"

You'll need a wrench and a medium screwdriver. Remove the fill plug to the transmission (just behind the sticks).

Stand/slightly squat on the left side of the tractor and look in the hole. Put in the screw driver...I just don't know how to describe it right, it's very intuitive -- just above the gears you see there's a bar. Push the bar to the rear of the tractor. It'll just feel right as it slides back in place.

You're back in business.

If you drive the tractor much, you'll even know when you've got it stuck. It happens when you pull "up" on the shifter slightly as shifting into 2nd. Although I don't do it much anymore, usually when distracted, I feel it happening as soon as I do it.
