TO35 Problem

Went to do some plowing and someone had been messing with tractor as gas was on and seat was down, two things I don't do. (I keep key, so someone may have been trying to hotwire it?) Anyway, started tractor and began plowing and tractor kept losing power after about 75 yards. Shut off key and wait 5 min and it would go again for awhile. Each time losing power and eventually shutting off. It would surge some too. Also, just before it would shut off, it would backfire thru carb. Checked points, seemed ok. Air cleaner ok. I suspect coil, or ignition timing, and carb has not been rebuilt so that is something I could do, but have done no repairs yet. I did get it back in barn. Any suggestions of what to try first? Could governor cause this type of problem? This tractor has always surged some. It is 1958 Deluxe. Thanks for help.

Thanks to all. I think it is ok now. Here is what I did: Thumped full family of mice out of area behind battery (cat waiting in corner of shed for easy pickins). Unhooked carb and made sure gas flowed thru line good. Checked tank cap which was ok. Checked air cleaner which was ok. Overhauled carb with full kit (about $27). Put several gallons of new gas in tank. Replaced air intake hose connection to carb (about $3). Tractor seems to work fine.

Had same problem with mother-in-law's 434 Int. and it was dirt in fuel line. Cleaned it out and good as gold after. Hope this helps.

Hi Phil
This to has happened to my to35, What I found was this. It was either my air filter oil was to thick, dirty, low, thin, whatever: I changed it, and found my fuel supply "dail" had worked its way closed or almost closed.This was after an hour or so of thinking about everything but, Sometimes we overlook the obvious.

Hi Phil

How old is the gas in the tank...new and old gas mixed may cause this problem.

The vent hole in the gas tank cap may be blocked with dirt. If it is blocked when engine runs the air cannot get in the tank to replace gas..a vaccuum is created and when vaccuum reach the same
inverse against the athmospheric pressure the gas cannot flow out of the tank and engine stalls.

It appens to me years ago.....

Thanks. I'll look at that. The gas was low, almost out, and I did add some after a short row. I have not inspected the gas cap. I've seen that on lawnmowers, but forgot about it.

If it is not the cause...

Next step is to disconnect fuel line at carburetor use a clean bowl under the fuel pipe in order to recuperate the gas and return it to tank after.

Open the shut-off valve under the tank the gas supposed to flow continuoulsly if.. flow and
suddenly stops after few ounces check pipe
flter valve and other components fro there to the inside of the tank.

Sorry I pushed the wrong button before completing previous post.

If you have good regular flow reconnect line to
carburetor. I recommend that you don't try to adjust carburetor because if it is not the cause
you will add a malfunction to the one you already have. If previous suggestions does'nt work please
post and we will go farher.

Phil: Hi. Based on what you describe, I wonder if whoever was messing with your tractor cranked it over and over, fouling the plugs. It sounds like the fuel system might need cleaning (sediment in bottom of tank, in sediment bowl, etc.). I guess you could check your carburetor settings. I am really thinking about the easy stuff at this time as you suspect that someone has been messing with it. I could see where someone realized that they could crank the tractor over with out a key, then messed with the fuel shut-off and eventually with carb adjustments...Good luck, David
