My recently purchased TO-20 has a bad piston but
bores appear to be ok. It has 3 5/16 over bore sleeves and pistons have flat tops. Can anybody help me out?

TIA

Hey John,

I have some used standard and some used oversized pistons for the Z120 - both sets came out of running tractors so there might be a decent one of the size you need. I"ll be glad to donate whichever you need if you want to go that route. (I bought them for the rods).

I would be blessed to have one. My current piston measures 3.292 If you have any that size with a flat top, please email me at [email protected].

TIA John

Unless you can find the exact replacement piston and brand of the same weight, I really would sugjest getting a matched set of 4 new ones or there will be balance problems, we once broke a crankshaft in a tractor by not paying attention to matching and balancing parts. Replacing just one is asking for trouble.

Thanks for the info, I'll watch the weight. If money weren't an issue I'd sleeve it.

CORRECTION: Piston measures 3.292 not 3.010

I've not seen new pistons for sale, they are usually sold as a matched piston/sleeve combo. Do a internet search, you should find several sites that sell just one sleeve/piston. I don't recall seeing just one sleeve/piston sold on this site.
You might find a used piston on Ebay, or some other place. Make sure the piston ring grooves are not worn beyond tolerence, that is usually the 1st thing to wear out on the piston. Pretty much all the piston/sleeve combos I've seen are the oversized ones.

You don't say how much oversize your piston is, it should be marked on the top of the piston.
It is possible to buy new pistons for this engine if you can't get a used one.
Take advantage of having it stripped down and hone the bores and fit new rings and grind the valves, you will only regret not doing it later.

John UK, Bore at top 3.315 Piston at least worn area 3.010 marked with a "P" on top w/4rings, 2 compression & 2 oil. It appears that someone tried to fix the cracked top on piston with maybe JB weld. Are pistons even the right size for sleeves? Thank you for all your help in the past.

If the piston doesn't have any other marks on it..like 020 or 010 or something along those lines then it must be a standard size piston.

If my sleeves are 3 5/16 could I use the oversize piston on this site, even though the top is concave vs mine which are flat, or would the compression change or weight difference of one piston be significant ? Part# S.60838

3-5/16" is the standard size of the Z120 engine so you wouldn't be able to use an oversize piston. Where they call it "overbore" that means it is bored slightly bigger than standard (to remove the worn part), so a piston for an over-bored liner will not go into a standard liner because it will be slightly too big.
Regarding the concave v the flat top piston, I personally would not like to mix them. I am sure that you would be able to find just one piston. Speak to your local parts people but they would want to see the piston in question I would think, although you could ask them for a standard one for a Z120 Continental, if you are sure it is a STANDARD piston.

I thought standard bore for Z120 is 3-3/16 and Z129
is 3-1/4. Over bore sleeve and piston set on this site is 3-5/16. I'm confused.

TIA

All these sizes are confusing me. Clearly he has a 3 5/16" piston / liner so it must have been rebuilt at some time with the oversize assemblies that replace the original. Have to disagree with John - standard size was 3 3/16", so a standard piston wouldn"t be suitable.

I was interpreting what it said on the website, it gave the sizes on there. And didn't I say take the piston out to make sure??? or have you forgotten that??No-one would order a part like that where the engine has been messed around without stripping it down first....

John, you didn"t say take it out to make sure, but suggested asking for a "standard" piston at the store. Depends what "standard" is ... factory original @ 3 3/16", or replacement "original" @ 3 5/16". Just for good measure, on my TE20 I bored my standard liners 1/16" to 3 1/4" !

How else would he get a new one to go in unless he took it out?
