TE-20 Air Breather - Oil leak

I have started to try and clean up the engine on my fathers te-20. I have changed both diesel filters, oil filter, cleaned the air intake filter, however the air breather filter (beside the diesel filters) bubbles with oil at the bottom after 10/15 minutes of it being started or doin work. A neighbour suggested that this may be piston seals which need replacing, Anyone experience this before, know what it is and how easy or not it is to fix? The crank shaft also bangs when the engine starts, wonder has this anything to do with it?

The "banging" you hear could be fuel related, not bottom end related. Too much advance on fuel timing will cause a diesel engine to knock quite badly. Check your manual for fuel injection pump timing.Check your oil pressure also.

You have a TEF not a TE20. If the breather is steaming like that the Engine requires pistons and liners, it really doesn't work trying to fit just rings in that engine. You will always get someone who says they have done it but it is a waste of time doing it. The banging on the Crankshaft, is the oil pressure ok? it should read between 40 and 60 psi if it is in good order. If the pressure is low it maybe the Crank needs grinding or just that the oil Pump requires a Rotor Pack fitting as the pressure is leaking away at the Pump, you will be able to see what state the Crank is when you take the Sump off to fit the Liners and Pistons. The banging could also not be the Crankshaft it could be just a Diesel Knock, Do you fill up the Ki-Gas Tank on this Tractor? if you do it could leak from the Tank into the inlet manifold and be drawn in when you try to start the engine and that would make it knock. It could also be a needle in an Injector that is sticking open when cold.If the Crankshaft is worn and it was knocking it would do it all the time not just as you start the engine. If you are attempting to repair this engine you should be aware that it is unlike a conventional engine where you take the liners and pistons out through the Top, the liners on this engine come through the Top but the Pistons have to be removed from the Con-rods, then the pistons come out through the top and the Rods come out through the bottom.
