Main Bearings - flanged?

I can only seem to find crankshaft bearing kits for my TO30 that have "flanged main"s. Yet, my manual call out non-flanged. When would you use a flanged one, and if not, why do they even put it in there? I am having to replace my crank with a re-ground one if that helps...

The TO-20/Z120 Engine reacted out the thrust on the flanged front bearing shell. The TO-30/Z129 Engine reacted out the trust on a thrust washer system. the crankshafts are the same nd the shop manual says "For service, the fiber washer (TO-30 System) maybe used in the TO-20 and the TE-20 provided the TO-30 shells are used." By implication, I would take this to mean that either thrust reaction system may be used as long as the appropriate front bearing shell is used. If you have the unflanged TO-30 shells you must use the thrust washer system. If you have the flanged shells you do not use the thrust washer.
If this were my engine, I would look for the correct TO-30 shells and thrust washers and install them. Other people have come across this problem and they may have different advice than mine. But if I were in your shoes, that's what I would do.

There has to be a reason why they changed the design between the Z120 and the Z129 and I think it was for better engine life. My original angine has about 3/16" (0.1875") end play when I used it as a core for a remanufactured engine. The spec is 0.003-0.007 "!!!
