Smokin' breather pipe

I was working the driveway with my TO-30 today when smoke, or steam, or something started coming out of the breather pipe. I am no mechanic but I didn't think that was healthy so I hurried back and parked it. After it was parked the radiator seamed to be smoking. The radiator is not in great shape and it always has wet spots on it after it runs but it has never done this. It may have been steam coming of the radiator but it didn't smell like coolant and it didn't spray out from anywhere in particular, it just looked like the whole surface was smoking. The temp and oil pressure gauge both read normal. Can any of you mechanics tell me what is going on? Thanks, VA.

VA: Based on your description, I would be concerned that the cooling system is not cooling (loose fan belt, water pump not working, low on fluids, thermostat stuck, radiator plugged, water jacket passages plugged, etc.). It sounds like its high time to get your rad fixed. A good radiator repair shop should be able to do this readily (a lot cheaper than getting your overheated cracked block pinned!). Its easy to remove the rad and flush your cooling system, check the thermostat, flush the block, etc. It is possible that you saw crankcase ventilation and nothing more, but this has not happened before, so I'd focus on the cooling system--begin with the easiest stuff (fanbelt tension, thermostat).

I did my radiator about three years ago. Cost me about $35.00. The repair shop said that it was really dirty, impeding fluid circulation that is important for proper cooling. Good luck, David

Do you have a thermostat installed? A stuck shut stat will naturally overheat the rad.,and if overheating is severe, overheat the oil -just before the awful knocking and seizing occur. The stat is in the top hose. That all I can suggest, perhaps someone else does have the answer.
