TO 30 Leaking Rear Axles

Now that I have my tractor running and going well, I feel I should work on making it stop when I want to. Both rear axles are leaking out of the brake drum. I have reviewed the section in the service manual. my first question is: do I need to remove the axle housings to R/R the bearings and inner and outer seals? #2 is it ok to reline the existing shoes or buy new shoes already lined? Thanks again, this has been a fun project, Jim.

All you need to do is remove the Brake Drum, the brake backplate and pull out the axle-shaft. Make a note of the shims between the back plate and the axle hub, they should fit next to the axle housing NOT the hub...John

Its not a bad job your IT shop manual is a great tool the hardest part was removing the bearings everything else is strait forward. Try brake cleen a CRC product it will remove the gear oil also use a small amount of white lithium geease on the wedge for engagement of the brakes a very thin film. have fun John

You do not need to remove the axle housings. You do need to remove the axles. If you can find someone to reline your shoes, I know of no reason you shouldn't pursue that. You can buy new shoes from suppliers on the left column on this site, or from any number of places. They are a little pricey, more than you would expect to pay for similar automobile shoes of the same type. Be sure and replace both seals on each axle. Pay attention to the shims for the axles when you remove them and try to put them back same way. When shimmed properly, you should be able to turn one wheel and the other wheel should turn the opposite way. Hope that helps.
