Perkins P3 timing chain...

I am looking at possibly buying a tractor that is equipped with a Perkins P3-144. I believe that the timing chain is badly worn, as it will not stay in time. Are there sources for new chains in the UK, or better yet, the US or Canada?

Thanks,

Brett

Yes you can get chains for them, possibly though you may have to get a length and cut it to your requirements though in USA. Have you check the Fuel Pump Drive, there is a fibre disc that wears on the front end of the Pump, the two halves of the drive can also be slack and it will change the timing that way, having a slack chain does not usually cause it to change the timing, I would check the Pump Drive. Is the Fibre drive disc still in place or has it disintegrated and you just have the two metal parts with a lot of lash in them.

Thanks for the pointer. I will be sure to check that coupling when I go to look again. It sounds like it should be easier to fix than a timing chain. Are other parts difficult to find for these engines? What else typically gives trouble? Can you suggest any sources for parts or information?

Best regards,
Brett Phillips

The only other thing that can give problems, although not very often, is the Diaphragm in the Governor part of the Fuel Injection Pump. If you do have to remove the Pump to replace the drive disc then replace this Diaphragm at the same time, it could save you a lot of time. You are correct, it is much easier to change the drive coupling than the timing chain, if it was the chain you would hear it rattling against the timing cover, they do wear, obviously, but not to any great extent. As I don't know where you are I can't point you to a local agent but try looking for Perkins engines in Google, you may find some dealer that you know, these engines are fitted in all kinds of machines although this is a old type now, it's successor is the one fitted in the MF35 and 135, but that has timing gears and a different drive to the Pump. The Diaphragm is CAV part number 7034-19A

John(UK):

I am in the USA where the P3 is not very common. The 3-152 is seen commonly, as is the F3-144 Ford Dexta engine. If I can borrow from those parts piles, I will be in good shape. Otherwise, I would expect to have to source parts from somewhere in the U.K.

Thanks again, Brett

I believe Perkins is now owned by Caterpillar Corp., so that would be the place to look for parts. Wouldn't hurt to try at your local Agco dealer. They took over the Massey Ferguson brand. The newspaper had an article today about a company that specializes in obsolete parts.
