I have a TO 35 Ferguson. How do you polarize a delco remy generator? I know very little about generators. There is a terminal marked A and a terminal marked F on my generator. I understand that a generator has to be polarized before it will work correctly. This newly rebuilt generator came with the old TO 35. I do not know who rebuilt it but I was told by the previous owner that it was a brand new rebuild. Unfortunately, the previous owner (my wifes uncle) passed away several months ago.

CJ15, Since you don't know the class of the GEN that must be determined or you may damage your regulator.

1. With GEN & Regulator all Connected

2. Loosen FAN belt so pully will rotate

3. Jumper Regulator BAT to regulator Armature, should spark, leave connected.

Does the GEN Motor(rotate)? Pully may need hand help to start Rotating. IF yes you are Polarized & Units Match, good for GO.

4. IF Gen did not motor in # 3, remove the wire from the GEN "F"ield Terminal. Connect a Jumper wire between the GEN F terminal & Ground.

Jumper Reg BAT to reg Armature, should spark, leave connected. Does the GEN Motor (rotate)? Pully may need hand help to start Rotating.
If yes you have a Class A Generator,if no go to 5

5. If Gen did not motor in # 4, Connect a Jumper wire between the GEN F terminal & Gen Armature.

Jumper Reg BAT to reg Armature, should spark, leave connected. Does the GEN Motor (rotate) ?Pully may need hand help to start Rotating.
If yes you have a class B Generator

Both the Generator & Regulator must be Matched in class. CLass A or Class B

Hope This Helps,
