The great debate around these parts is weather the needle valve need be shut off every day. I say that if the valve packing is good and carb set right there should be no need. I thought I'd bring it here for a vote

I always turn my fuel off.have never had a starting problem since. My 1954 tea-20 still earns her keep but sometimes might sit in the shed for a week or two but fires first time.

I used to get unpredictable results when I would leave the shut-off open, sometimes fine for days, sometimes had gas dripping out the air intake after overnight, or just hard to start, which was due to the carb bowl being overfilled with gas... I always shut my shut-off valve, and never have problems now. You always run that risk with a gravity flow gas system.

I turn my gas off on my Fergy and anything with a gravity feed . Sooner later you will have trouble if you don't. Might take years but you will have trouble.

Listen to Duner. I ALWAYS, okay-amost ALWAYS, turn mine off and on. I have one worker 35 and 3 tinker 35's..... and they don't get checked on very often. I had a pin hole in my float causing it to "sink" or stay down leaving the needle in the OPEN position. And yes, I dumped over 4 gallons of "liquid gold" back into mother nature.
It is way too easy to just turn it on and off to take a chance. Mark

In theory, you're correct. The float valve should close off the flow when the float bowl is full. Even over time, the fuel will evaporate from the bowl and more fuel will be added to keep the bowl full. To prevent this they added the shutoff valve. At leasyt that's my theory.

However, the the hinge bracket in the carb usually has some wear on it and even though you set the carb up correctly, the slop in the hinge can allow the float assemply so move laterally, possibly rub on the side of the float bowl and/or misalign the needle slightly, and not apply full bouyant force to the needle and the needle leaks. Most of us shut off the valve rather than make a carreer out of trying to adjust the slop out.

That works fine for me, except in winter, when it gets cold I get leaking.
