One wire alternator

I put one of these (Delco 10si style) on my old truck that I'm restoring. I found out the hard way that these things bleed the battery of it's energy if it sits for a while without running. Unless the battery is disconnected.
I would like to go to a 3 wire setup. I noticed there are plastic plugs over the tabs where the sensing and exciting wires would normally connect.
Could I pull the plugs off and connect the normal way, and would it work ok, or does the regulator have to be replaced?

I have a one wire alternator on my JD-4020. It sat at least 6 months from fall to spring and started without having to charge the battery.

Be sure your battery isn't poor, and very dirty. A dirty top on a battery will run it down as will faulty alternator parts.

I have one wire alternator on my Ferguson tractor. It does not drain the battery after sitting for a week. It works great, I got it at O'Reilly's for only 70 bucks or so. I can get the part # if you are interested.

I'd say if the alternator is bleeding down the battery, you have a rectifier bridge, diode trio, or voltage regulator problem.

Although some deny it, it DOES seem at least SOME of the one-wire alternators are prone to slowly discharging the battery. The newer ones MAY be better, I don't know.

If the rectifier bridge and diode trio check out, I'd replace the voltage regulator.

I have a one-wire on my '53 jeep. I've never noticed it draining the battery over long periods. It sits all winter in a corner of the garage and starts up 1st time every spring. You may have a problem somewhere else in the system. I don't think you can just pull the plug and wire it up like normal. One wire alternators have a self-exciting circuit in them, whereas 3 wire setups have external excitement (an idiot light).
