Possible internal hydraulic leak on TO-35

Hey fellas, the three point lift on my 1955 TO-35 sinks all the way down within 5 seconds upon pressing the clutch, whether it has a load on it or not. I remember someone once saying you could remove the dipstick plate to see where the leak is coming from. Is this true? Measured with the arms all the way up, the dipstick reads full. The fluid appears clear and yellowish, but I don't know what type is in there, I've never changed it. Could maybe the wrong type of fluid cause the hydraulics to bleed down fast? It seems the pump is constantly running when the clutch is engaged and the arms are raised. Any suggestions would be appreciated, have a great day everybody!!

The oil needs changing to GL1 90W which is as thick as engine oil not thick gear oil or you can use 30w/50 Multi-grade. The fault you have is common with the 35 type hydraulics, it is caused by worn pistons on the Pump or/and a worn Control Valve. On this system there is no check valve unlike the earlier system so once there is wear the pressure can escape. Take off the round cover by all means and check where the leak is, if it is in the area of the Pump then the Pump will need overhauling. Thanks John. So, does this mean there is no "relief valve" on the TO-35 hydraulics, just a pump? If I get a chance this weekend, I'll try to find where that leak is coming from. Also, is the 30w50 multigrade you speak of a type of engine oil? If so, I've never seen that type here in the states. The closest oils we have are 20w50 and 15w40. Sometimes you also find 50w engine oil. If these are suitable for use in the gearbox of my tractor then I'll use one of the two. Modern, detergent type oils are suitable, aren't they?These oils are certainly easier to find, and cheaper than GL-1 90w. Let me know when you get a chance. Thanks, have a great weekend.

Oh no....there is a Relief Valve/ Safety Valve call it what you will but NO check valve, that was a little valve attached to the early relief valve on the 20/30's that took any pressure off the pump now it is carried on the valves in the side chambers and they often leak, the Control Valve is a different design to the original it has about 3 or 4 washers that split up the oil from the various compartments on the valve, but they wear and when they do the oil can escape through there too. A check valve would have prevented all this, it's easier to change a check valve than overhaul a Pump. Yes it is an engine oil and the grade will vary depending on the climate you live in, 20W/50 will be ok.The multi-grade does not get as thick when cold as GL1 and in some areas, particularly Canada it is a great benefit to them. There isn't a lot of detergent in them so I was told by Castrol Oil but if you intend using this in your tractor you do need to be reasonably certain that the housings are clean or any detergent there is will dissolve the sludge into the oil and that would cause problems.

Yes you can remove the dipstick plate and observe the underside of th lift cylinder for leaks caused by bad rings or a cracked cylinder. There is also a tube in the right hand upper corner of the housing that seals with an o-ring that could be leaking. You could also have a stuck open relief valve. these can be seen with a flashlight with the engine running, the PTO engaged and the lift lever at the top of the quadrant.DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTATNCES, STICK YOUR HAND IN THE HYDRAULIC COMPARTMENT UNDER THESE CONDITIONS. Look up to see the lift cylinder, use a mirror to see the righ upper corned and look down in rear of the pump for turbulence and noise that indicate a stuck open relief valve.
