Ignition woes

'54 TEA, generator, 12V, positive ground. I have three coils. Hook one up, tractor starts right up. Runs fine from idle to full throttle. I turn off the engine. Try to restart, no luck. Hook up second coil - tractor starts right up. Runs fine from idle to full throttle. I turn off the engine. Try to restart, no luck. Hook third coil. Tractor starts right up. Runs fine from idle to full throttle. I turn off the engine. Try to restart, no luck.

Coils are the right type/voltage. Any ideas? Could there be a problem with the voltage regulator? It, as with all of the other ignition system components, is new.

There ae two types of 12 V coils; the genuine 12 V coil and then there is the 12 V coil that says, in fine print, that it's to be used with a resistor. Are you sure that's not what you have? I agree with Duner; check the key switch. ALso check to make sure that your voltage regulator is not over charging and causing a high primary current that's overheating the coil.

I would try a jumper wire from the battery - post to the coil to see if the ign. switch is faulty.

And make sure positive earth at battery - positive from coil to distributor.

I'd be suspicious of either a faulty switch or fauly wire from switch to coil.

Have you checked for spark when you change coil and it won't start? Check at coil lead to engine block.

Sure you have all nice clean earth leads?
