TO-30 flywheel ring gear

Is the TO-30 ring gear inside diameter suppose to have a taper? The flywheel does not have any sort of taper. I am a machinist. With the ring gear inside diameter being tapered and the flywheel not having a taper, this not much contact. Maybe 30% of contact with the flywheel. I have measured both pieces and the ring gear has about a .003 press fit on the clutch side and about a .009 gap (NO CONTACT) on the starter side of the ring gear. I would think the ring gear would not have the taper so both pieces would make 100% contact with each other. The problem I am having is that the origional ring gear broke off of the flywheel into seperate pieces. I went to local clutch shop where they installed a new ring gear. I installed it, put tractor back together and tried to start it. RIng gear slide off of flywheel unharmed. I dissassembled tractor, put ring gear on my self, heating gear, the necessary steps of the operation, also making sure gear would not slid up as it cooled. Everything looked great, gear to shoulder on flywheel. Reassembly of tractor, start up, did same thing again pushing gear off. I purchased another ring gear thinking shop might of installed wrong gear. Both gears have same serial # as this site's parts sponsor (1750034M1). Both gears have taper and both identical purchasd at different shops. Problem: Flywheel? Ring gear? Thanks

Kit, I have attached a link to a web page from one of the guys on the N board for installing the ring gear. I think the fergy ring gear & N gear are the same sort of thing. The link comments on the taper that you are asking about, sounds like that is typical. I know if the ring is overheated, it will not stay on.

I had the same problem with my TO 30 and have read about 4 or 5 more here on the forum that also had the problem of the ring gear being driven back by the starter. It gets driven back far enough that the starter won't engage but usually stays on the flywheel and cuts a nice deep groove in the bottom side of the housing. I suspect some of the early TO 30's were made with TO 20 flywheels which didnot have the lip to hold the ring gear in place. My serial number is 62yyy. I applied a fix that I read about here on the forum. I drilled and tapped 6 evenly spaced holes in the backside of the flywheel near the outside edge and installed a washer that goes beyond the edge of the flywheel. Bend the part of the washer that sticks over the edge of the flywheel up towards the ring gear. These 6 clips will hold the ring gear in place. I bent the clips to hold the ring gear where I wanted it first and that determinded where I drilled the holes.

Are you fitting it at the wrong side of the shoulder on the Flywheel? the Starter should knock the Ring gear onto the Flywheel, if it is fitted on the wrong side of the shoulder it will knock it off.
We have had that a few times.

I don't believe that the ring gear should be as you describe. I beleive the ring gear should be a constant diameter and has to have an tight, interference fit to be able to transmit the starter torque to the flywheel. I can't understand how your ring gear comes off since the flywheel should have a lip near the clutch face end of the flywheel whose diameter is greater than the front part of the flywheel. The original TO-20 did not have this and the ring gears were eventually driven off by the starter impact so Ferguson made the change I described.
When i bought my TO-30 it had an old original TO-20 flywheel( I still have it!) that did not have the lip and someone had tried to weld the ring gear on. Well it came off and jammed between bellhousing and the flywheel and I couldn't move the tractor unless the transmission was in Neutral and you couldn't crank the engine. I had a heck of timing getting it in the barn to work on it. Took me a while to figure out what was wrong as I thought at first the starter drive was shot.
I think some of these aftermarket parts are being made in China without much quality control. I bought an adapter kit to change to a spin oil filter and the gasket was the wrong size. I had to make one out of gasket material and send the dimensions to YT Tractor Parts so they could tell their supplier what the correct dimensions where. The suplier should have been able to figure it out based on the sealing surface of the adapter plate.
