After loaning out my TO 35 to a family member, I got it back smoking like the proverbial tar kettle. It seems to be burning oil proportionately. The air filter was makeshift and iffy. I am sure this was the cause of the problem. Now the question... can I do a simple ring and rod bearing replacement or do I have to go with complete new sleeves, pistons, etc? I am aware of the wear issues and the the limitations of a partial rebuild. But this tractor only sees light duty with a bush hog or box blade, and no more than 50 hours per year. It is a gas Z134. Thanks

Are you sure it's the rings? If you use too light a grade of oil in the aircleaner, the oil gets sucked into the engine and causes smoking. Worn valve guides can cause smoking at high vaccuum(low to moderate rpm with little load).

Have you "read" the plugs? What do they look like? Have you done a compression check with the engine at operating temperature, the throttle plate wide open and the aircleaner disconnected from the carb? Before you open up the engine, do some diagnostics. There maybe a cheaper fix that cures the problems you are having.

The air filter is not original and is a makeshift foam type. I know this is potential for a problem, but it operated that way for a couple years with zero oil use. Though all it did was some driveway work. The smoking and oil use came on quite suddenly. The person who borrowed it was spreading lime roadbase on his drive which is about a quarter mile long. When it left my house, no smoke. When it came back, tar kettle smoking. I did check plugs and they have varying degrees of oil on them. Compression is 90-100 on all 4 cyls. It does have an external oiler to the rocker arms, so I will check that before going further. However it has been there for a long time with no problem. Thanks

Very seldom can someone mess up an engine in good shape in a few days. Spreading road base doen't sound like particularly heavy work. What did your friend say about the smoke? Are you sure your friend didn't add some oil that may have been handy(like 5W30)? Does it smoke more at high power or low power? If it's at low power(high manifold vacuum) it could be valve guides/seals. If it's at high powers only it could be the oil control rings. SOMETIMES you can put Marvel Mystery Oil or ATF fluid in the cylinders for a few days and it frees them up.

Is the breather flowing? Make sure it's not clogged cuz if it is, all that blowby gas has to go somewhere and it maybe down the valve guides and into the cylinder with the oil. You said you had an upper end oiler are you sure it's not flooding the cylinder head?
90 psi is getting down on compression but a lot of guys are running with 80-85 psi.
In my opinion, you need to get that K&N off there because it's only gonna' give you grief in this application!
