I read Matt Higgins post - thanks for all. My problem may be similar - here goes:

1. TOTAL tractor rebuild ('54 - 12V pos ground)
2. Engine ran fine for 1.4 hours
3. Month later, went to start it, ran fine for .1 hrs.
4. Engine now won't start (yes, there is fuel)
5. I have the original Lucas coil - thought maybe it was the culprit so changed it with new one (12V).
6. Started right up, ran like a charm.
7. Day later, engine won't start.

?1 Does coil polarity matter. I have the wire from the distributor connected to the pos terminal of coil.

?2 On the original Lucas coil, terminals are marked SB and CW. Which is + and -.

?3 Does the coil need to be grounded to the chassis.

Yes, coil polarity matters. The wrong polarity can reduce the spark energy by about 50%.
I assume that you have a 12 generator electrical system and not a 12 V alternator electrical system. The Alternator sysytem requires a negative ground. If you have the 12V generator and your battery is posiive ground then your coil connect is correct.
Yes the body coil should be grounded to chasis as the internal high tension circuit is grounded to the case. It usually is through the bracket and bolts. If you ohm the high tension circuit through the terminal tower, you can get the high tension ohms when you touch the side of the case with the other probe.

I have no idea about what SB and CW mean on the coil markings.

If he told you what actually is written on the coil it would help Jerry. What it says is SW = switch wire and CB = Contact Breaker

Correction. The the high tension lead is not grounded to the case. Sorry for the misinformation.

Coil parity is very important.

Positive earth - pos (+) side of coil to distributor; neg (-) to ignition switch.

Coil case does not need to be earthed.

Can't imagine why it must be earthed, after all it is only a single pole switch, but I also could not imagine any distributor which is not earthed through the mount or drive shaft.
