TO-30 Head Gasket/ Cracked block

My dad has been having some problems with his TO-30. This evening I took a look at it and saw that there is coolant leaking out near the waterpump, and when I pulled out the dipstick a milky looking oil oozed out at me. Is there anyway to tell without taking the head of if it is the gasket or a crack?

Hayden... Cracked blocks are not the only source of water in the oil. And that is a major repair that is expensive and time consuming. If the water pump is leaking, I am going to assume the possibilty of having been overheated. Because the top end is the first to lose cooling and overheat, it is quite possibly just the head/head gasket. To check the head, a compression check might give some indication about the condition of the head gasket, but that test is not fool proof for either. If it were me, I'd pull the head, check it for cracks and straightness (maybe at a machine shop), if okay then re-install it with a new gasket. If the leaks continued, I'd suspect leaking through cracks from the block cooling jacket into the crankcase or past the seals of the piston sleeve liners. YOu can check this by pulling the pan and looking up above the crankshaft for evidence of leaking cracks or leaks around the liners. Even if there were cracks in the block, my first line of defense would be a good radiator stop leak.. this is not going to fix the problem (or be effective with head gasket problems), but might clog up the cracks enough to give some more time of use until it is convenient to tear into the engine. (Incidently, I have two blocks that are cracked; one I am having fixed, the other not.) Jim

The block is more then likely cracked. Should just take it appart and have it furnace brazed
