I will soon own an early Grey Fergy. I currently have the occational use of a Fordson Super Dexter with a two stage clutch. People tell me that there are big limitations in having a single stage clutch.

Is this true or are the limitations something that can easily be worked around? Examples quoted are;

1. Not being able to slash up to corners.
2. If using a post hole digger you cannot operate the 3 point hitch without the orger from turning.

Hi

I used tractors for more than 40 years now
I will be retired soon

I have two TEA-2085 Fergies (with no live PTO)

I'm looking for a 35 or 135 which will have
live PTO and may be power steering.

If the old grey one comes from relatives and you
want to keep it as nostalgia should be OK.

If not for little more $$$ you can have a good
tractor with live PTO and power steering.

Just my humble opinion.

Don't buy a tractor without live pto,you'll
regret it no matter what anybody says.

I have a TE20. I run a rear grader blade and a slasher (Bush Hog). Found out you gotta run an over-ride clutch on the PTO with a slasher or you get pushed into a tree, ditch, etc, or break a PTO shaft (very expensive). Over-ride clutches are available in Australia through any Massey dealer from Bare & Co. (www.bareco.com.au) at about $110. I have 5 acres which the Fergie takes care of extremely well. Bare Co also have all the parts you might ever need to restore, repair and service the "little grey Fergie". Cheers

It will also cut going backwards, so backing into the corner while the blade is turning is okay. L8R----Fred OH

Is it ok to engage the PTO if the tractor is moving forward or does the tractor have to be at a dead stop. I am new to farn equipment so sorry if this is a dumb question.

Thanks

Frank

You should stop, disengage the clutch, wait for all motion to stop before shifting the PTO lever to engage the PTO drive gear. You may shift the lever to disengage the PTO without stopping first. Finally, the only dumb question is the one not asked. Noone ever started out with all the answers. There are quite a number of knowledgable people here, just ask, someone has the answer.

#1 you must purchase an overriding clutch for the PTO to drive directly into a corner without the bushog, or similar equiptment, from pushing the tractor after depressing the clutch. #2 is true, unless the PTO shaft is disconnected.

Is it possible with a single stage clutch to slash into a corner by having the gearbox in neatral but releasing the clutch while the PTO leaver is engaged?

Also what is a bushog? I have heard of this implement many times on American sites but it is not a term used in Australia. Is it what we call a slasher, which is a implement with one large heavy blade designed to cut tall grass.

Vaughan: A "Bush Hog" is a brand name for the more generic implement called a brush hog. These are sometimes called rotary cutters. They are ususally constructed with a heavy deck and either have a single blade or more commonly two flail-type blades. They are suitable for cutting tall grasses, and small trees/shrubs. I have used my "Bush Hog" (Rebel model) to clear a building construction site that is overgrown with grasses, saplings and brush. As Ray suggested it works best with an over-run coupler. I am sure you'll come to appreciate your new Fergie. Good luck, David

A Bushog is a brush/weed/grass cutter made like a rotary mower. Depending on the size, they will have 1,2, or 3 blades, and may vary from 4 to 36 feet and over, wide. Bushog is a brand name, numerous companies make these cutters though. You can cut in a corner, as you say. The procedure is: disengage the PTO and back into the corner and stop. Engage the PTO and engage the clutch. After cutting the corner you must disengage the clutch and wait for PTO rotation to stop before putting the transmission into gear, then engage the clutch and continue as normal. With live PTO you don't have to fuss with all this. Live power/PTO is a decided advantage Your message made me realize how narrow my view is. I just assumed I was talking to someone in the US, so I did'nt explain clearly- sorry.
