I have a 1952 TO-30 that I am redoing the pump, trying to clean and all that good stuff. Does anyone know if there are supposed to be rings on the pump pistons? Mine don't have any and I have been having problems with very weak hydraulics. If there are rings is there a part number?

Dave,
partially drain your system til you can remove the side cover.if the top of the pump is visible you should be able to see two clamps on each side of the top of the pump. below each clamp are two steel heads the size of a quarter or so. have someone turn over your pto shaft by hand with the pto in gear and watch the ara around these round heads or plugs.a light will be necessary. If you see air or fluid oozing from around these plugs the rubber boots beneath are weak, a common problem with thes pumps. If this is the case loosen the clamp bolt on each side and pop off these tops. you can order copper washers to place under the plugs and seal the leaks or go to your local automotive store and get copper washers or seals used under oil drain plugs to fit. Place these under the plug on top of the pump and tighten the clamps down. if this is the problem you will see an incredible change!! You can do this without taking out your pump if you work through the two side covers and are patient. Good luck.

To the left of this page is the research & info "box". click on artical archives, search for posts on hydraulic problems. Look for posts by Zane Sherman,he's the resident expert. The ford 9n,2n and 8n basically have the same pump as the TO20 and TO30 so the ford info can be helpful.Good luck

there are no rings on the pump pistons, there may be some wear causeing the pump to be slow.however the ferguson system is always slow when cold. it takes 15 to 20 min.of operation to get normal operation in cold temps
