Hello to all, My voyage continues... now checking the wiring for continuity. using a multimeter. Zeros (leads crosssed) at 0.6 ohms. My batt to starter solenoid cable reads 3.6 ohms. Is this within acceptable limits? I am cleaning connections and tightening as I go. Found a rusty and loose ground connection and both nuts on coil were loose. Is it ok to check resistance across the solenoid with it activated if the starter is disconnected? Thanks for all the help, Jim

Either you have some small battery cables or you have some internal resistance in the battery cable that's too high. Annealed copper 2/0 cables have a resistance of about .00008 ohms per ft. Even a #4 cable is only 0.00025 ohms per foot.(Ref: Mark's Handbook)

You're measuring 3.6 ohms and that's way too high for 6V starter cables. Are you sure you're reading the resistance correctly?

Move the ground lead from the back of the dash panel to one of the bolts in the area of the starter, the dash doesn't make a good connection after 50 years. Your tractor should be Positive ground unless it has an alternator.

John Thanks for the reply. the ground cable had been moved to the bell housing bolt, but was rusty and a bit loose. I am checking each segment after cleaning and tightening with a multimeter for resistance. New to this game but learning a bunch about 6V electric systems. Jim.

Jim, The important electrical contact is the "underside" of the Cable connector to the Bell housing.

Remove the bolt & cable, wire brush the contact area of the Bell Housing to BARE metal. Reconnect your cable & bolt (you can paint bolt/nut head)

The Bolt or NUT itself is best defined as the Mechanical connection, and must hold the contact areas tight.

Don't measure ohms on HOT (powered)devices. The way to measure your cables is "VOLTAGE" drop "end to end". With one probe of your meter on the Battery Hot post, place the second probe on the Cable end @ the Selenoid.
Meter set to measure voltage with Scale ~10V or lower. Then energize the Selenoid with starter connected. You should measure "Less" than 1.0 volt, more like .2 volts for a good cable.

You leave the first probe on the battery post and move the second probe to the other side of the selenoid or Starter POST. Again energize the selenoid with starter connected. You should measure less than 1.0 volts, more like .4 volts for a good cable & Selenoid

Jim, 3.6 Ohms, yes probably okay, and surely sufficient to get you going. I don't recall ever checking ohms on the battery cable. More importantly, you want to install the biggest, fattest battery cables you can get, not those 4/0, or whatever skinny 12V cables, but the 2/0 or fatter, cables like they use on trucks and diesel engine leads to the starter. That will maximixe your amp transfer on your 6V system while cranking your cold engine on those frosty January morning. Also make sure your ground lug is clean & shiny.

Your solenoid is basically just a remote controlled switch. You can check continuity by disconnecting both the battery cables, activate the solenoid with the key, and measure ohms across the solenoid, should be low, a few ohms. Also check ohms across the solenoid with the key switch off, you should get no continuity across the solenoid, insuring no slow battery drain. It is somewhat common for old worn-out solenoids to "leak" some voltage, even when off, which causes slow battery drain.


If you are interested, you can re-convert your TO-30 back to the original wiring scheme which has no solenoid. You should have the remnants of the orginal gear shifter actuated start switch on top of your tranny housing. It is probably faulty, which is why the prev. owner installed a solenoid. For a few bucks more than a new solenoid, you can buy a new original equipment style start switch on your tranny. Totally your call, I have a solenoid on my TO-20 also and have no plans to convert it back to the original equipment starter switch.

Thanks George, I will continue my cleaning and tightening. If the solenoid is faulty, I may look into the gear shift starter. I see a plate under the dash on top of the trans housing but looks like a home made bracket to hold the solenoid, dont see any leads to indicate a switch mechanism. The safety point made about not being able to start in gear is well taken.Thanks again for the reply and help, Jim.
