hi, i have a severe bang or pop which is coming from under the battery area
in my massey ferguson to35.here is what i've suspected and done:
1:#1 plug was fouled, replaced.
2: when i disconnect #1 plug noise quits
3: replaced connecting rod bearings(4)crankshaft was in good condition.
4: checked pistons, looked fine to a novice, but #1 seemed a tad loose.
5: replaced breaker points, timed engine.
6: replaced timing gearcover gasket along with front oil seal, no play in crank, the noise is still there, i tried to isolate it with a long srewdriver
to my ear and engine.the noise appear to be more of a air/exhuast noise,
but is not coming from the exhuast pipe. my suspests are:
1: bad #1 piston, hope not.
2: bad timing.
3: bad valves.
4: some type of exhuast vavle or venting.
5: air cleaner troubles
please if anyone can help. thank you

Lefler: In addition to trying Ray's suggestion, I'd try to confirm that your firing order is correct and that you are getting good spark to each plug. For example what happens when you take the #2 spark plug lead off, then the #3, etc. Does the sound change? Why is the number 1 plug fouled--is it the intake valve or is is poor spark (rotor, cap, sparkplug lead (increased resistance) or a worn distributor shaft)? Eliminate the easy & cheap stuff first. If none of this works, my hunch is the number 1 exhaust valve (seat (carbon or burned), spring, etc.). Keep us posted and good luck, David

Quite difficult to diagnose it seems. I don't know what it is.I suggest perhaps an intake valve is leaking due to carbon buildup. You might try this, won't harm anything if it doesn't work. Disconnect the breather hose and spray carb. cleaner into the air intake as you would when cleaning the carb.then idle down and spray until it stalls the motor, switch off ignition and leave it until the next morning. I did this to a Dodge V8, and next morning after approx. 15min. the motor smoothed out and stopped backfiring through the carb. This I learned from an old mechanic in the late 1950's, only there was no aerosol cleaner then,he used the liquid, but you can't do that with your updraft carb. It may not work, but the carb. will be clean. Good luck!

TO-35
was home today messing with the tractor, while the engine was running and popping from under the battery area, not exhaust pipe, i,d pull the choke out slowly the noise would stop. Ray thinks an intake problem, i'm leaning that way myself. any other suggestions? thanks,...tom
