Oil Change TO-20

Good Day!
I am changing the oil on 1950 TO-20 and was wondering if the cover on the outside of the oil filter screen should come out of the pan from the bottom. I dropped the filter element and the screen strainer but the other cover stays inside the pan. It is loose but looks to be just a bit larger than the opening in the bottom of the pan. Has anyone ever taking this out from the bottom? I wanted to check to see if the felt washers and spring are still in behind the oil filter cover.
Thanks!

I changed oil in my 1949 TO-20 and found no cover on the filter. I replaced the filter and bought a cover and washer and gasket. I've had trouble ever since with some leaking around the cover. Much better to have an external filter. I used a whole tube of silicon to seal the cover. You cover is probably warped just a little and it will be difficult to slip out. You may have to remove the oil pan.
Good luck

Craig,
I have been told, by a reliable source, that the cover will come out the bottom. He did say it was difficult to do. I've tried once, unsuccessfully, to take mine out. You might be able to put two magnets on the inside, and guide it out. The problem seems to be getting a hold on it to guide it out...it's a tight fit, as I'm sure you've already found out.
Good luck
Sandy
