Good Day Tractor Gods. :)

Well, I got the 51 TO 20 fired up and running. The PTO and hydraulics work. I did have an oil leak, but found that the person how changed the filter last left the old brass washer on and installed a new one into of it. This gave me chance to change oil and see how the filter is installed.

To my current issue. The tractor was stuck in gear, what seemed to be first. I pulled the top plate off of the tranny and noticed three shift bars which slide back and fourth. The center bar slides very free, wile the two on either side seem to be much firmer. The ware on the bars doesn't seem to be bad. They have a grove in them for the ball at the end of the shifter to ride in. What I think is happening is the ball is jumping out of the grove which causes it to stick on top. Is this common? Can you still buy the shifter and plate which contains the fill plug?

Any input is greatly appreciated.

The problem will be wear on the selectors that the Transmission Lever moves in, if you have the top off you will see this. all you can do is lengthen the transmission lever slightly to replace the wear and change gear slowly, don't snatch at it. You can put the selectors back in line without taking the top off, just remove the oil filler plug and do it through there with a long screwdriver.

I also have a T020 same year with same problem.
It gets stuck in first also.
I've had the gear shift lever out and the ball on the end has two (2) flats on either side. Is that wear or is it suppose to be that way?
I also use a screw driver to align things.
I run a machine shop and have thought about tig welding and grinding the ball to a spherical shape. Can anyone advise what it is suppose to look like?

The gear lever normally does have two flats as yours has, so it isn't wear. Using a screwdriver is the normal way of doing it, we have always done that since the tractors were made. The only real way to stop it is to build up the actual selectors where they are worn, but this means taking the box apart, not a quick fix to that one.You may get away with it for a while by lengthening the lever slightly.

A friend suggested putting a heavier spring.
What do you think?
It is my first tractor and if I am careful not to lift up on the lever is stays engaged. Danny

Lifting the lever does cause problems and you need to educate yourself not to do it (easier said than done..lol) you could try a heavier spring, it wont cause any problems with the selectors, so it is safe to do so, let me know how you get on with that and what kind of spring you use if you actually do it, that info could help someone else if it works as you would wish....John

I'll let you know how it works.
I've got to get the spring off and locate or make one similiar with heavier coils.
As I recall, it appears to be tapered.
