TO-35 Problem

I have a 57 model w/ the 4 cyl. gas motor. It has the 12v conversion and electronic ignition. Yesterday I was mowing my pasture with my 6' rotary mower and my neighbor, who also is the previous owner, asked if something was wrong with the tractor. It didn't sound like, to him, that the governor was working like it should. I've hd the tractor for about 11/2 yrs but haven't used it that much. I was using 2L and 3L to mow.If I tried to use 1H it wouldn't pull, the RPM's would drop no matter if I gave it more throttle. He thought the timing might be off a little so I loosened the distributor and I could get it to turn to retard the timing but it wouldn't turn to advance it. It was like it was hitting a stop. There is another 1/4" bolt horizonally at the base but has nothing to do with the tighting the dist. down that I can tell. I have one of the manuals but the info is sorta vague. Any info would be greatly appreciated and I do apologize for the length of the post.

If you need the information on how to reset the engine governor (the timing information too) just email me at:-

and tell me again what you need. Someone mentioned the governor only working over a given speed range, this is true you should be using the engine at PTO speed for your mower(540rpm) which will be 1500 engine rpm or 3/4 throttle if you don't have a rev-counter. You can't speed it up or slow it down (the mower) as it is designed to work at PTO speed, if the load gets too heavy you drop a gear, keep the blades sharp and in balance with each other, this will ease the load. You select the forward speed according to the crop you are cutting and the horsepower you have available, sometimes it is easier to take a narrower cut if it is really heavy or raise the height of cut, that is what the adjustment is for, don't always expect cut it all in one pass every time. The horizontal 1/4 bolt does clamp the Distributor and the rough setting should be done with this slack and then the fine setting done on the scale...John

The grass I was mowing was only about 12" tall. Come to think of it I don"t remember hearing the governor kick in when getting into some thicker stuff.

Dear Ivan,
I also have a TO-35, a 1955 model. You say you are having trouble mowing in 3L and 1H? At this time, I am mowing with my 5 foot rotary mower in grass that is 3-4 feet tall, and my tractor does its best in 2L. This has been my experience with most tractors of this size. I don't think the governor can compensate beyond a limited range. Often when going up a hill or if I encounter a patch of really thick stuff I have to give the tractor a little more throttle.

If you have to open the hand throttle when you hit a lump of heavy grass, the governor needs resetting as it should do it automatically. There will be some wear in the linkage that will account for this and resetting will cure it.
