I looked at a TO20 that turned out to be a TO30 yesterday. The owner had told me he recently overhauled the motor. While I was looking at it, I noticed a milky/oily looking puddle underneath the oil pan. I had already checked the oil with the dipstick and saw nothing like the color underneath. I asked the owner what he thought that was and he didn't know. I'm thinking some liquid has gotten into the oil (cracked cylinder) or something like that. My questions are these--why doesn't it show up on the dipstick (I don't know when he last changed the oil). Is this common for a TO30? I dragged my finger along the bottom of the oil pan and got the same stuff that was in the puddle below. Am I looking at a problem here?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Michael Williams

Also, the steering box can leak down into the bell housing and out the weep hole if the bottom cover on the steering box has a pin-hole, etc., and the steering gear can easily get water into it if the tractor has been sitting outside, which would make for a milky color. I don't understand how he overhauled it and didn't know it was a 30?

I don't know how he didn't know either. I checked the serial number--it is TO 60301 and it has Z129 stamped on the left had side of the block--so I guess it's a TO30. Thanks for the information--I'll check it out.

Michael: Did you also check the radiator fluid and the trans fluid for the same milky formation? Try removing the oil filler cap as well. Could the rear engine seal or front trans seal have been leaking? There are weep holes designed to allow a leak to drain and not saturate the clutch with oil. Good luck, David

Hey Michael: What does "recently overhauled" mean to this guy (owner)? Does this TO-30 look like it has fresh gaskets and has been worked on extensively? If the fluids have not just been changed, I'd smell each for things like a gasoline smell, a burnt smell, etc. Keep us posted, David
