My tractor is disassembled for a rebuild. It was suggested that I check the front axle piviot pin. My question is how do you tell if it is bad?

If you look under the Radiator from the engine side you will be able to see the Pin going through the axle, if there is a space above the Pin it is worn and should be replaced. The space should really be very little just enough to allow the axle to move on the Pin, so if it is more than that it is worn. Never grease the Axle Pivot as it will collect grit and wear rapidly. Use graphite powder as a lubricant on the Pin and Bush. If you don't replace the Pin and Bush it can bend the Radius Rods and the axle beam can hit the bottom hose connection on the Radiator. If you need help with it, email:-

Did you have excessive slope movement in that area when driving it ? Especially on rough terrain you'll notice the slope & sometimes if really bad the fan will hit the shroud .If you have it this far along , I'd take it apart & check it for wear to be sure . Why take a chance & have to do it later .Those machines are old & so are the knuckles . Good luck & God blesss. Ken

Any slack in the pin or bush, change it if the front end is apart! Any wear in the pin and bush is amplified further away from the pin, including bending the radius rods.

My front axle beam is modified with a grease nipple - but don't try drilling that beam with a home hand held electric drill!!!

Hi , even with that grease fitting , you still should just change out the pin & bushing to save all questions in your mind . We can't tell you what to do but go with your feelings . It isn't that expensive to buy the parts & the ease of mind is worth it .But as someone else said ; grease will increase wear due to dust, pollens & dirt getting in there .I put a swipe of never seize on the new parts when installing & that's it . Good luck & God bless . Ken

Hi Bob;

The manual for my TO-35 cautions against greasing the pivot pin: dirt embedded in the grease will accelerate wear of the pin.
