My 1957 TO 35 air cleaner is different than the usual ones I see. Mine is not connected to the back of the dash but has a different top and a tube with a glass jar at the bottom. The orig. owner states thats the way it was when he bought it. When I stipped the grey paint off it was orange underneath. It seems to work well but I would like to know if it was an option. Anybody know? Thanks

My guess is the orange paint was for an industrial use, perhaps a school or highway department. Not sure why only that part was orange (assuming that is the case since you didn't say otherwise), but may have been dealer installed.

You might want to check the archives for this. I'm pretty sure someone asked about that very thing last winter and also posted a picture of it. Sounds just like yours.

not positive, but I think only the 20's and 30's had air filter on back of dash. On the 35's it near the back of dash but actually mounted to side of batter tray.
I think what you have is a "pre-air cleaner" meant to catch big stuff before entering air cleaner.

Hi Mark,

My TO-35 has the air cleaner intake tube routed into the back of the dash and is not connected to the battery tray. The manuals I have show this as well. Just a FYI.
Regards,

Roger

I also thought it could work as a pre-cleaner but the orange paint underneath is still puzzeling to me. Thanks
