My TO-20 needs brakes--BAD!! Can anyone tell me where the best place to get brake parts for her?? Also, any opinions on which how-to manual and where to get it?? I'm pretty handy with a wrench if I've got a good cookbook!! :)

I HAVE HAD MY BRAKES APART 2 TIMES NOW I REPLACED THE OIL SEAL IN THE END OF THE AXLE TOWARD THE SHOES.AND THEN I FIND OUT THERE IS ANOTHER SEAL NEXT TO THE AXLE BEARING THAT ALSO HAS TO BE REPLACED IS THIS TRUE?

The TO20 &30, have brakes nearly identical to an older auto. brakes. If you have ever installed brakes on a 50s or 60s car/pickup, you have already seen a copy of your tractor. Some auto supply stores carry replacement shoes. I got a starter switch today at NAPA. If the axle seal is leaking any, tighten the retaining bolts on the back side of the brake backing plate some. This is also the time to adjust the axle end play. When you shake one tire at the top and hear the axles bumping together(both wheels raised)adj. is needed. If you want I can email you the page from the O&M manual for this adjustment. I will not post it however, don't like jail! Good luck!

Sometimes when you pull off the wheel and hub, you will find that you don't need brakes at all. Their just covered with oil from a wheel seal leaking. Clean it all out with mineral spirits (don't use gasoline) and sand or rough up the brake shoe lining on the surface and put it back together and test your brakes. Then if thats the case, keep it parked on level ground so it won't leak as much out again while you're waiting on new seals. Sometimes too much oil in the resorvoir will help to ruin the brakes.
