TO-20, antifreeze in oil :(

Last fall I replaced the antifreeze in the radiator, and I just went to change the oil, which drained a gallon of antifreeze then a horrid looking sludge... I"m assuming this means my headgasket is blown, but is there anything else I should look for before ripping into it?

thanks.

Hey Mgross..... not bad to work on. Get the service manual if your going to rip into it. My block was cracked in between the webbing and I found a guy in western mass. (I am in NH) who "pinned" the block....holds fine and runs sweet now. As I've researched, its almost impossible to find a TO 20 block which is not cracked. I have also seen where people have had the cracks furnace brazed. check the archives on this site....tons of good info. Good luck.

Thanks, that's encouraging! I have developed Muscular Dystrophy, so I can't do the work myself, but a friend's teenage boys who are budding young motor-heads can provide the muscles!

Only ~3 ways to get antifreeze in the oil, especially a gallon of antifreeze. Blown head gasket/warped head, bad o-rings on the bottom of one or more cylinders, one or more cracks in the bottom ribs of the engine block. Hard to say which one you have. The easiest way to check some of these is to drop your oil pan, wipe down the block around the cylinders, look for leaks/cracks where antifreeze is getting thru. A black light helps, antifreeze has tracer chemicals that makes it glow under a black light. Sit a piece of cardboard under the engine overnight & see if you get antifreeze drips. Make sure your coolant system is full when you do that inspection. The block is mostly hollow & actually holds quite a bit of coolant... maybe a gallon. If you don't see the problem after dropping the oil pan, next step would to probably pull the head.

It's a wet-sleeve engine? I hadn't realized that. cracked block is my biggest fear, but if it's not that, are these very hard to work on, or would it be best to haul it to a shop?
