TO 35 Air Filter

I have a 1957 TO 35 Ferguson. Not that familiar with the TO 35 but I am learning alot. My question is I have a oil bath air filter. I dropped the bottom of the filter out and the oil was full of sluge. I noticed there is a filter material above the oil cup or pan. I saw a small round looking bracket that looks like holds the filter media in place but it will not budge. How do I get the media out? Can I just clean it or should I replace it?

I might add that if you have access to a parts washer, just run the solvent through the media until its reasonably clean. Or, soaking it in the Berryman's Chemtool solvent in the gallon buckets that they sell at parts stores works really well too.

The metal mesh does NOT come out. I have heard of others who have drilled out the "spot" welds that hold the retainer in place, then they could remove the screen. I have even been seeing replacement screen for sale. I clean the bottom cup and mesh out by running under my parts cleaner.
Before I had the parts cleaner, I would use a little gas and a parts brush on the bottom cup, and I would place the main body into a folgers coffee can and then fill with gas and let soak.
Most came clean and settled to bottom. I would then take remaining gas and pour from the top several times and place outside in the sun all day to dry. Fill bottom cup to "fill" line with same oil as engine. Good habit to clean bottom cup EVERYTIME you change oil. Mark
