Rear end play is back..why?

I have a question about the rear axle play adjustment on my MF50. The rear end is the same as a Ferguson F40 or TO35. Last year I replaced the axle seals and went through the shimming process by the book to set axle preload. Everything went well and I was happy with the results. After I used it a few times it was still good..no noticeable movement when you grab the tire and try to shake it. The other day, I happened to test it again with the shake test and there was a definite clunking now. I checked all the bolts on the trumpets and at the ends of the axle where the shims are and they are all tight. My question is, why would so much play return after only one season? Is this a sign of the bearings going? The tractor is used for mowing and snow removal and the odd job here and there. The rear end oil is clean and only 6 months old. There are still some shims left I can remove, but is there anything else I should look for?

If you shimmed it correctly it should be ok unless the bearings are going bad but I would have thought that they would have shown up as worn when you did the work, the only other thing is that the shrink-on collars have moved, how did you fit them...did you heat them and drop them in place or did you press or knock them in position.

Hi John. I didn't do anything with the bearings. They looked ok and I just repacked them with grease. I was just replacing the seals and adjusting the axle play. Only had to remove one shim. The new movement isnt excessive, I was just suprised that some had returned. I will have to have a look at the bearings again I guess. Dan

The main thing is did you heat the collars "cherry-red" before you dropped them into place on the axle-shafts so they would drop all the way on then just tap them into place to make sure. I ask this because we have had some who just knock the collars into position without heating them, doing it this way removes some metal from the inside of the collar and so it can't grip the Axle-shaft tight and they will move.Is it just the Axle-shaft causing the problem or is it the Diff that is floating too much..John
