Jerry, I asked below about the negative coil terminal connected to the distributor on a negative ground 6v battery. Here's what I got. The TO30 had the battery grounded at the negative terminal. The coil terminals are marked BAT and DIST. Currently, the DIST terminal is wired to the distributor. If this is the original coil and the tractor was originally positive ground, then wouldn't that mean that it is wired bassackwards? The battery is almost new and was undoubtedly installed by the previous owner, who had only owned the tractor a year before I bought it off him. Which is the negative terminal on the coil: BAT or DIST?

First of all what electrical system do you have? A 6V/ generator or a 12V/alternator? If you have the 6V/generator, your system should be hooked up as a positive ground. That's the way they came from the factory. If you have a 12 V/aternator then that should have a negative ground.

Do you have a fat, bluish-white spark? If you do then your polarity will probably be correct.

I have never seen an original equipment coil marked that way so I'm going to guess it's probably an modern automobile 12V coil (where negative ground is standard)unless you tell me there is something on it that says otherwise. Given that, I would guess that the DIST terminal is the negative terminal. If my guess is correct, then to use it on a positive ground sytem, the BAT terminal would go to the distributor side of the circuit.

There is a way to test to see if you have the correct polarity. I've never tried it because all my coils have been marked (+) or (-). Let me know if you need to know how to conduct the test.

Ok. Thanks Jerry. It is a 6V set-up. I've still got the wiring harness, generator, etc. off the tractor. My plan was to re-install the battery with positive ground, replace the coil, and polarize. I'm replacing plugs, wires, etc., as well. My only uncertainty at this time is which coil terminal to run to distributor. Most likely the replacement coil (haven't got it yet) will be marked + and -. If that's the case, and I understand you correctly, then I will need to run the + on the coil to the distributor since it will be a positive ground battery....right?

Yep, the wire to the distributor must run to the coil terminal that has the same sign as your battery ground. A(+) ground on the battery means th wire to the distributor from the coil must be on the coil (+) terminal.

the battery terminal is positive if your are using negative ground system. the coil bat connection should be coming from your ignition switch. it should be wired correctly from what you wrote.
