Brad, the normal configuration for the oil filter in the TO20 is the return line from the center main bearing drops down to within an inch or so of the bottom access plate in the oil pan. The return line has a couple "metering holes" that allow the oil to drain out into the oil filter. The oil passes from the return line, through the filter, into the oil sump. Only the oil from the center main bearing is actually filtered. The return line is tapped at the bottom to thread a bolt into it, that bolt goes thru the bottom cover, and that is what holds the bottom cover onto the bottom of your oil pan. There is a spring that goes on that return line (to push the filter down flush to the bottom cover so it seals somewhat), then a steel cover that goes in the crankcase (the cover keeps splashing oil from getting into the filtering process), then a screen strainer, then the pleated oil filter, then the bottom cover plate & bolt that holds all that stuff up into the crankcase. The oil supply line to the pump is positioned to be between the filter, and the strainer, so all the oil going to the pump is at a minimum filtered through the screen strainer. As far as sourcing parts, you can surely get many of the pieces from a Massey dealer. Also watch EBAY, there are used engine components listed there all the time. That oil filter is unique to the TO-20. The TO-30 & 35 have totally different oil filter systems. Frankly, my opinion is the cost & effort to get your TO-20 back to original is likely NOT WORTH IT. The oil filter only filters a small amount of oil on any given pass. Your bottom plate was probably welded-up because it was leaking due to the pan, or plate being warped. It IS a good idea to strain your oil through a screen of some sort to prevent solids from jambing your tight clearance oil pump. If I were you, I'd probably just figure out a way to attach an oil strainer screen to the oil suction line, change the oil regularly, and be happy ! George
