TO-20, We have finally restarted working on this old beauty -have a few days until things dry out around here to continue a landscaping project--(all day kind of labor, all hand work getting ready for Mothers Day,) (dont forget fellow's, May 13), it would be kind of nice to have the old girl T0-20 to drag off some trees we are going to cut down ---we put in new battery, turned over good but no spark-we have current through the coil, down to the distributor, but there, somewhere, it stops. new condenser, new points-still no good-plug wires all new.
---At one point last winter one of Us non mechanics was fiddeling with the distributor, pulled it up right out of the block,"whats this?" the idiot says--We already have explict directions from this discussion board on how to put it back in properly--- printed off and ready to go. thanks. ---My question is this, do we have to have the distributor back into, or about, its proper position to get spark? Our mechanic is bringing volt meter tommorrow(THURSDAY) for another session-we only get to work on it a few hours a week at a time--
---one more thing, when replaced the condenser & points,We took the old ones out, took them to the tractor supply place to make sure we had matching parts-could not get back to work on tractor for a week-in the distributor, there is a copper band sticking up out the inside of the distributor, i think it was attached to the back of the points.
Is that where that copper band is attached? and what exactly does it do? I have two manuels, even the old original manuel, but there is no mention of it , so I am trying to make sure.
Thanks, i sure appreciate this board

Thanks, Cent. but it Looks like i made the first post too complicated.
Here is summary of question
---Does distributor need to be in exact position in order to allow apark test?
---What else could be stopping spark test if current is going through coil?
thanks

The distributor doesn not have to be in the correct position (i.e the engine properly timed) for a spark to be generated. However, without the spark occuring at the proper time, the engine will not start.

The copper piece sticking up is to be hooked up to the moveable side of the points aS it completes the primary circuit thru the points to ground. What drives the distributor? Gear drive?Does it also drive the oil pump? What method if so? CENTAUR
