Steering sector play...how much is too much?

As I was messing with the wiring today, I happen to pull on the left steering sector where it comes out of the steering box. There is about 1/2" of lateral movement there. Not near as much on the right side. Here's a photo of the grimy sector where it exits the box:

And here's what it looks like when I pull it out. No excessive force is needed to pull it out this far.

How bad is this situation? What am I looking at for a repair? Is the grime evidence that this situation is resulting in loss of steering box lube from this area?

It will require seals and bushes at the very least and most likely it will need the steering arms too. Possibly better to look around for another box. The oil has run out and it has just worn away the bushes.
