TO 20 Alternator Wiring

I have replaced the alternator and amp gauge on my TO 20. It had two off/on toggle switches installed by the previous owner. One switch would let it start�the other I don�t know what it was for. In the process of installing a new single switch using the wiring diagrams posted I have run into a problem if wired as shown I am not able to shut down the engine without removing the heavy wire from the alternator. It will start without it connected but will not charge. If I connect it back or touch it to one side of the switch it will charge. If I connect it back at the end of the day it will discharge the battery overnight. Looks as if I need to replace the switch just to be able to charge the battery and shut down? Any thoughts?
