I am draining the gear oil and wish to replace it in my TO-35. A fellow came by today with an old manuel that said to use mineral oil in these things. He indicated that someone told him not use regular 90 weight but ATF. My local NAPA store dosen't have a clue. They have 90 weight mineral oil. Can someone enlighten me?

Everyone has told you what to buy and where to get it. Your tractor holds 8 gallons. Drain both drain holes. Let it drain overnight. Reach inside and get all the gunk out you can. When you fill it, put in 6 or 7 gallons and let it sit overnight or at least several hours and then check the level before you put in the last gallon or two. Sometimes you don't get it all drained. There is a baffle that keeps the level from being even for awhile. As for using the 5 gallon cans, they are much much cheaper. If you have a one gallon can, just fill it each time on the ground and use it to pour instead of lifting the 5 gallon cans, your option. Doing this on a warm day helps. It doesn't pour quickly in cold weather. Hope that helps.

Dwight:

The other posters are correct mild EP 90W, GL-1 (MF-1103) is the correct oil for your TO-35. GL-5 90W is not recommended.

To help clear up the confusion, GL-1 is sometimes called "straight mineral oil."

Dwight,

You have a couple of options, as best as I can tell. The fluid everyone agrees on is GL-1 90 weight oil. This is what came in your tractor from the factory. It can be found at Napa, also TSC sells it as "Ford Tractor Fluid". A 2-gallon jug is about 20 bucks. John from the UK says it is acceptable to use 15w40 engine oil, especially in colder weather. Big Dean says that Massey's Permatran 3 is acceptable as long as the hydraulics are in good shape. But everyone agrees on GL-1 90 weight. I have a T035 myself, welcome to the club!!

Be sure you buy API Spec. GL-1, not 80/90 gear oil.

NAPA part number 65-205 is the GL-1 Oil. If they do not have it on hand they can get it is a day or so from the regional wharehouses. ... i.e. call first and ask for them to get it.

When I got mine, I pulled up to the store and through the window I see a guy loading my buckets of oil up on a hand cart. Before I get out of the truck here he comes out the front door. I get ready to go into battle mode. Turns out he is rolling it around the store to the lower level storage area. I was now happy and he was happy to roll it only 10 feet and he loaded it while I went in to settle up my bill.

A 5 gallon bucket of 90wt oil will weigh less than 40 lbs. More like 35. The NAPA cans come with a pour spout on them but you will still want a funnel.

Before putting in the new oil spend the time to fix what needs done while the oil is out and if your old oil had water in it make sure that you follow the oil housing cleaning procedures.

Jeff, you mention following the "old Houseing cleaning procedures" enlighten me. I did not intend to take the top off the gear box.

5 gallon bucket may be cheaper, but trying to pour out of a 5 gallon bucket without making a mess can be challenging and heavy. 1 gallon buckets of 90 weight mineral oil are easier...
