I am looking for informaion on how to identify a tractor I recently purchased.

It is a Harry Furgeson
SN:TO-47725
4cyl Continental Gas engine Block NO Z129A SN 600372338 starter Delco-Remy
1109457 1C1

HI Daniel... The Z129 block not only was used for the TO-30, but it also was used for dealer replacement blocks for the TO-20... This makes it a little bit difficult to determine exactly what you have inside the block without a little more information... What I understand is that replacment blocks for TO-20 had the casting but not the drillings for the external oil filter so that you could use the pan and filter from the TO-20... If it was just an engine swap for a Z-129 for/from a TO-30, it would have the external filter drillings... There has been some lengthy discussions in the past.. you might try to find it in the archives.... Also, is there a serial number on the block by the coil? This could help pinpoint the year of the engine.. JIm

Jim I assume the oil filer is an external mounted housing. There is a round can like canister mounted on the right side of the motor near the bottom of the engine. Directly below the carberator.

I put a pic on the Photo page. It is listed as TO-??. The picture is reduced in quality if you want an original i'll email them direclty. I have several of both sides of the motor and tractor.

I appreciate the help in making the proper identification. The tractor needs some TLC and I would like to keep it as original as possible. I would also know what i'm working with to know what to expect. Thanks

I put together a correlation of tractor vs engine serial numbers some time ago... graph above and the original link below... As an approximation, the engines were numbered 240,000 more than the tractor serial number. However, this is only approximate as the engines apparently arrived for assembly in lots and there was no effort to keep them sequential. My guess is that your engine came out of a 1954 TO-30 or at least was made in 1954, but that is only my opinion...

As Jerry said, your serial number appears to indicate a TO-20. However, your block number that begins Z129 indicates you have the engine of a TO-30!! Just to doublecheck, the TO-30 engine has the oil filter on the right outside the block, while the TO-20 engine has the oil filter inside the pan. At first blush, it appears either someone put the Z129 (TO-30) engine in your TO-20 tractor, or someone replaced the dash and maybe the steering gear on your TO-30 with the dash and serial number plate from a TO-20.

Phil I guess I should read ALL replies bofore commenting on a reply. I guess you can see that I was confused about that as well in my responce to Jerrys message. I wonder if there is any other way to narrow it down.

If you look on the left of this page, under Research & Info you'll find a heading called Serial Numbers. Click on that to identify the year your TO-20 was made.(The TO-20's had serial numbers less that TO-60001.)

Thanks. I think i figured out how to tell the model. The serial numbers remained sequential from model to model. There was no overlap of producion from one model to another. I just assumed that serial numbers were restarted at zero when a new model came out. Another part that confused me was i while reading on one of the forums it was stated that motor with blocks Z129 were used starting with the TO-35. Is there a way to verify the age of my motor since it is a Z129?
