TO-20 water pressure

In my 1950 TO-20 service manual it states that the coolant system operates at 4 psi. I'm having a little difficulty finding a radiator cap with that rating, and want to know if there is a hazard to using one with a higher rating.

If your cooling system is in reasonable shape, there's no harm in a 7 psi cap. In fact it will give you a higher temperature capbility before the coolant boils. You mention "water" but you should be using a 50/50 mixture of water and antifreeze.

I accidentally ran a 7psi cap on my TO20 for 2-3 years before realizing the error on my ways and getting a 4psi cap. Never had any problems running the 7psi cap. If you have a sound cooling system, it is a non-issue.

I got a 4 psi cap from TSC, it was likely a Tisco supplied cap, so you can probably get one from any Farm & Fleet / TSC type store that sells Tisco parts, or an Agco, or Ford/New Holland dealer. Yes, you can get them from you favorite auto parts place also, I see them pretty regular in Auto Works, Pep Boys, etc.

Thanks. I found several sources for the low pressure cap since my posting.

Does anyone have a Napa part number for the To-20 thermostat? I see they have them on the old tractor parts page, so I might just go there to help support them.

Check out a Carquest #33004 . It might be a 4 lb. cap. I have one on my TO 20.

The recommended radiator cap for my TEA20 is 4 PSI or 7 PSI under heavy load conditions. I too am having problems finding a good quality 4 PSI cap to suit. (Good quality = stainless and copper, not all steel.)

I would think a 7 PSI cap on your TO20 would be OK.
